CELEBRATE: It's All About That Joy, 'Bout That Joy- 1/17

This week I CELEBRATE professional books!
As I mentioned in last week's celebrate post, I love to take handwritten notes and look back at them for inspiration. In particular, I love to look at notes I've taken from conferences, workshops, professional reading, and pretty much all things literacy. I also should mention that I love to buy professional books. My collection started with a few favorites like Debbie Miller's Reading With Meaning and Georgia Heard's A Place For Wonder. I love to read these two books in particular over and over every year before school begins. I look back at my notes and reflect on how I've grown. I think about what new goals I have.
I enjoy trying new strategies, reflecting, and thinking about literacy topics. (Now that I'm actually reading this out loud to myself, I realize this all sounds a bit crazy!) However, I found myself online again this week with my cart full of resources. This time only four titles.
I knew what I had to do so I started the process of eliminating one. But, I just couldn't do it. I started doing exactly what I always do when I need to make a decision. (I referenced this in my OLW post.) I over-think. I over-analyze. I waste time.
But this time it was different. I knew better. So, I quickly put my OLW to work and thought "What do I want?"
I wanted them all. So I bought them. Now I have four books on the way and can't wait!
What professional books are your favorite? I could start a new cart :)

Enjoy your four new books. My addiction is picture books - can't seem to pass a book store without finding my way to the counter with a couple in my hands. My favourite teacher resource is an oldie - Teaching with Intention by Debbie Miller.
ReplyDeleteI agree Sandi!! Moving out of my classroom this year was no easy task for that exact reason. :) I also LOVE Teaching With Intention and have re-read that one several times as well because it is just a wonderful book that speaks to me differently each time I read it.
DeleteA wish to buy and read PD books is a sign that you are a learner, ready to continuously improve your craft and as a coach support others. I am curious what four books did you buy this time. I am currently rereading: Carol Ann Tomlinson's Differentiated Classroom and Jay McTighe's Essential Questions.
ReplyDeleteThanks for reminding me of that!! I'll have to check out that Essential Question one. Have you read Peter Johnston's Choice Words? SO GOOD!
DeleteThis time I chose:
1.) Becoming a Literacy Leader: Supporting Learning and Change by Jennifer Allen
2.) A Quick Guide to Reaching Struggling Writers by Colleen Cruz and Lucy Calkins
3.) No More Independent Reading Without Support by Debbie Mille
4.) Good to Great Teaching: Focusing on the Literacy Work that Matters by Dr Mary Howard
I share your love of PD books too. I read, share, reread sometimes, give away and still have shelves of books.....I just finished Teach Like a Pirate. Inspirational!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I had that in my hand over the holidays at our local Barnes and Noble. Guess that is going on the list, too. Thanks for the recommendation!
DeleteI totally laughed when I read about your decision to buy professional books. I place an order at Amazon at least once a week so I can totally relate! I do this even though I know that it may be awhile before I get to read the book, but I feel that just having the book in my personal collection makes me smarter. :) I have those 'must read' books that I read every summer too. Mine is The Book Whisperer by Donalyn Miller.
ReplyDeleteJennifer
Thanks for being a fellow book hoarder! I haven't read The Book Whisper yet and it's killing me. I know its a good one!!
DeleteHey Marcie,
ReplyDeleteI can identify too...I want to get the latest book from Kate Messner-59 Reasons to Write and Perfect Pairs by Melissa Stewart! Have fun reading!
Ooooo sounds like another good one. Will check it out. Thanks for sharing in the PD book love fest. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great blog you have!
ReplyDeleteI understand your love for PD books and notes! ;0)
